Dave Olsen, 60, from Southampton, is no stranger to the streets of Southsea – in fact he’s one of a few runners who’ve completed every single Great South Run since the very first one in 1990.

This year marks 35 incredible years of the world-famous AJ Bell Great South Run. Taking place on Sunday, 19 October the iconic event will welcome a record-breaking number of participants, coming together to mark 35 years of unforgettable running moments on the South Coast.

For Dave, this year is going to be even more special: he’ll be joined on the start line by his son, Elliott.

“The Great South Run is my main focus each year which drives my fitness, I love the atmosphere and the camaraderie among the competitors along with the opportunity to line up with the very best athletes in running.”

That drive and dedication have seen Dave lace up his trainers year after year, and as he celebrates turning 60 this year, the sense of achievement is bigger than ever.

His commitment to the Great South Run is unwavering. He credits his wife, Clare, as his “support team and physiotherapist,” a vital presence throughout every race season, and every recovery, too.

“She’s always been there for me,” he adds. “The race wouldn’t be the same without her support.”

The Great South Run is more than just a race. The flat, fast course winds through Portsmouth’s historic dockyard, past iconic landmarks, and along the scenic Southsea seafront.

The atmosphere is truly unique. From the friendly pre-race buzz in local cafés, to the mass warm-up and the ever-enthusiastic volunteers, the day has a celebratory, community feel.

“The atmosphere before the race is very special – the expectation of a good time, meeting friends and family, chatting in the cafés – it all makes for a great day. The course is flat and fast, so you really can challenge yourself. Just make sure you know where the finish line is – the final stretch can be brutal!”

As someone whose ran every Great South Run, Dave reflects on how the event has developed over the years.

“I have to start with the kit – when I first took up running it was in a pair of Silver Shadows, short shorts, and a cotton vest. Try doing mental arithmetic when tired, using a stopwatch and mile markers to pace yourself!”

Whilst the course has maintained it’s charm, there is a greater interest in running and fitness and that encourages more sponsorship and raising money for good causes. All of which fills the day with excitement and good will.

“And finally there is no rushing home at the end of the race to see if you were on the television only to find the old VHS recorder had failed to capture the event!”

Dave’s advice for anyone thinking about signing up?

“Invest in a good pair of running shoes. Take your time building up the miles. If you can, join a parkrun and train with others. On race day, arrive early, pace yourself, 10 miles is a long way, and most importantly – smile and enjoy it. It’s a celebration!”

From his home office in Southampton, where he works a desk job, Paul knows the importance of staying active. The Great South Run gives him the push he needs to get outside, set goals, and meet like-minded people.

“35 years is such a milestone. Staying fit is so difficult and as I get older so important. At The Great South Run it’s easy to find others who share the same passion for running. And it’s great fun, too.”

As the countdown to race day begins, Dave’s story is a testament to the power of consistency, community, and the enduring appeal of the AJ Bell Great South Run whether you’re chasing a personal best, running for charity, or simply enjoy the challenge.

Limited spaces are still available for the AJ Bell Great South 5k, and the Junior and Mini South Run. This year’s 10-mile is now sold out, sign up for priority access for 2026.
