Runners Unite for Local Bristol Youth Charity

First set up in Bristol more than 30 years ago, Step Together Volunteering is a charity that works with vulnerable young people across the city and beyond. Focused on personalised 1:1 support for 16-25 year olds who are not in employment, education or training, the charity helps people change their lives for the better through volunteering and learning opportunities.

Step Together has entered a team for this year’s AJ Bell Great Bristol Run, with the hope of raising awareness of the charity’s work and vital funds. Among those taking part is Head of Operations, Deborah Saw.

“We’re a small charity and it’s all about fundraising and raising awareness of what we do,” she explains.

“Much of our work is with young people who face multiple disadvantages, which might include neurodiversity and learning difficulties, poor mental health, low confidence and a lack of self-esteem. They’re often socially excluded, or they might be abusing alcohol or drugs and could even be on the verge of homelessness or getting involved in criminal activities.

“Step Together takes a unique approach of combining one-to-one support that is tailored to each individual’s needs and circumstances, with carefully selected volunteering placements that help young people to build their confidence, skills and experience. Our support isn’t restricted to a set amount of time either, as we know full well that effecting positive change can take time. We’ll work with young people for as long as they need us, which can sometimes be for a couple of years.”

New to running, Deborah was inspired to sign up for the 10k after watching the team running for Step Together at the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run in 2024.

“I saw people running who were older than me, who had a disability and I thought that I should at least give it a try. After three local Park Runs, I’ve realised how much training I need to get in! If I can at least get around the course, that would be great!”

Also running for Step Together is Alice Abrahams, Project Manager on the charity’s Young People’s Project in Bristol.

“So many young people have not had the right support to get them to where they deserve to be, they can withdraw from society and feel hopeless. We care about giving these individuals space to be heard and supported in the best way we can. I am running the 10k to raise money for our valuable work, to help more young people achieve their potential. I’m proud to be running alongside some of my colleagues and to tell more people about the vital work that we do.”
